Printing Formula Errors

Did you know that you have options as to how Excel prints formula errors for you?

I mean, if you’ve got a worksheet you’re still editing, it’s possible that you’re still working out all the “bugs.” So, maybe you’ve got a few formulas displaying the “Oh-So-Wonderful” error messages.

You know you’ve got to fix them, but maybe you don’t want the error messages cluttering up the printout as you work with the rest.

It’s for situations such as these that I offer today’s tip.

In the Page Setup window, Sheet tab, you’ll find your options. (File menu, Page Setup choice).

In the Print section, you’ll find a drop down list labeled as Cell errors as.

It’s here, from this list, that you have a few options.

You can choose displayed (which prints the error message as you see it in the worksheet), blank (which leaves the cell blank upon printing) or you can have Excel print either of the other two symbols on the list.

Once you make a choice, click OK and you’ll go back to your worksheet.

If you chose something other than “displayed,” you’re probably looking at that worksheet and wondering what it is that you’ve done wrong.

Fortunately, I’m happy to say that you’ve probably done nothing wrong. Or, at least if you have, you won’t be able to tell by looking at the worksheet.

Keep in mind that this setting affects how errors are printed, not how they’re displayed in the workbook.

So, if you choose — for your symbol, you’ll see this in the workbook:

While Print Preview and printouts look like this:

Now, I do realize that our goal is no formula errors (ever!), but for the occasions when it’s necessary, you can take control of the way they’re printed.
