Q-Dir – Tame Windows Explorer & Copy Files Easier

Have you ever found yourself in Windows Explorer hell? You’re trying to copy a file from one directory to another, tabbing between windows or trying to drag and re-size Windows Explorer to fit? It only gets worse if you’re trying to follow instructions from a webpage while attempting to remember which window goes to which folder.

Q-Dir is a fantastic simple tool which lets you have multiple copies of Windows Explorer open at one time in one simple window. The default view shows 4 Explorer windows in list view at the same time, but you can customize each window to your liking.

What kind of tasks is Q-Dir ideal for?

  • Copying files from one internal drive to a backup drive by dragging/dropping between windows.
  • Copying files from a memory card reader to directories you choose in another window.
  • Moving files from one directory to another.
  • Viewing images in one window by turning on thumbnails, while easily viewing file names/creation dates in other by using list view.
  • Comparing two folders to make sure all files are duplicated during a backup.

The interface is pretty simple with icons in each window similar to the Explorer everyone already knows. The price (totally free) is right. I would definitely give it a try if you’ve been looking for a way out of file copy madness. Q-Dir is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 & 8. You can download Q-Dir by clicking here [1].

P.S. If you don’t want to install Q-Dir on your system, you can click the portable installation option during set up and in target folder change the selection  to the directory where you’d like to save the program. Once the setup completes, a portable version of the program will be available to  copy onto a flash drive. You can take it with you and use on any Windows computer without the need to install Q-Dir.
