Refreshed Windows 8 – How Can I Get 8.1?

I refreshed my computer and now I can’t get 8.1 which was a free download before and now it won’t download. I have 8. Thanks for any help.

A refresh is an excellent alternative to a reinstall. You keep your important files and any apps that you’ve downloaded onto you computer. However, you will lose all of your previous Windows and app updates.

Unless everything is completely up-to-date, you can’t install 8.1 That means not only do you need to visit the Windows update center to make sure all of the necessary updates are installed on your computer, you will also need to go to the Windows store and get updates for your apps there.

Prior to 8.1, you had to visit the store separately. After you catch up your Windows updates and your Windows store updates (I warn you, there could be a whole bunch of them), then you can install Windows 8.1 from the app store. You’ll then need to run all of the updates for Windows 8.1 from your update center. Then you can install the update to 8.1.1 and then get all of the updates for that.

And after doing all of that Windows updating you have to read about and use the RECIMAGE.EXE tool. It is the part of “REFRESH” that MS “forgets” to mention.

Recimge.exe is part of Window 8/8.1. Really, access to it should be built into REFRESH, but unfortunately is not. It is a tool that works with Refresh.

Recimge.exe creates a new “image” file to be used by Refresh. The reason that Refresh nukes all installed “desktop” type applications (specifically like Office!) and Windows updates is because the default “image” file created at the computer factory does NOT include anything that YOU have installed. Recimge.exe takes care of this problem.

For more detailed info about Refresh and Recimge take a look at this link:

It’s very nice of you Ron,to have detailed on avoiding this problem. Thank you very much! And, please remind MS and get them to patch up their ‘Help’ on such ‘forgotten information’. I request you because, as an MVP, your words might carry weight there.

I wonder why even a mammoth identity such as MS slips & misses badly! Earlier, I’ve heard about their slip on ‘Update’, and now it is on ‘Help’.
I wish MS does a thorough review of their processes especially the ‘Testing & Help’ that includes testing/reviewing the ‘Missing Issues’!
