Great advice, it’s too bad most people don’t use these tools properly and frequently. I use them every week and know my computer is safe and clean.

One more addition to the monthly procedure. Backups. 2 if you are paranoid, or have had bad experiences, and one if you are laid back.

Doing a backup before the other monthly steps is a good idea because they all manipulate file, with the potential of deleting the wrong thing or even causing a HD failure, so you have a “fallback” point. Doing a backup after everything is done means that you are sure that you are only backing up known good files. Better for future recoveries.

It is always a good idea to have an anti virus and keep it up to date.
You can get a good one for free, it is Microsoft Security Essentials.

If you’re not sure, it’s generally safe to use the Windows default. By that I mean, don’t check or uncheck anything before running the cleaner.

Great tip on monthly maintenance, however, what items do I clean up in my disk cleanup? I don’t want to erase something that is needed.
