Remove Desktop Temperature Monitor

Heidemarie asks,

I have some computer problems, my home page msn.com when I click on outlook for my email the page gets redirected and comes up with all kinds of ads. The ads say Desktop Temperature Monitor. I ran my Windows Defender and it shows nothing, also a temperature icon popped up on my taskbar. It tells me the Las Vegas temperature. Anything I do I keep getting popups. Please help.

Hi Heidemarie,

Desktop Temperature Monitor is adware/malware that was added, likely along with some other free program you purposely installed. Windows Defender might not have found it because it’s a malware program, rather than a virus.

First, you want to go to your Control Panel and remove the program from your list of programs. Look for the name Desktop Temperature Monitor, or something similar. You may want to sort by Installed date to check for other unwanted programs that may be installed at about the same time by clicking on the Installed On at the top of the columns.

Then, download AdwCleaner, a highly recommended program to remove Adware and browser hijacks from your computer. Install the program and run a scan. When it’s finished with the scan, click on the Clean button to remove any files found. (You may want to browse through the tabs, as there could potentially be programs it finds that you do want, such as ad blockers. If so, uncheck those before hitting Clean.) The program will close all open programs, as well as restart your computer after you select Clean.

When that is done, perform a Threat scan with Malwarebytes for any further unwanted programs, and quarantine those. These steps should remove the pop ups and the program from your system.

    One word describes adwcleaner–IT STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It not only removed files and programs from my computer that I did not want removed, it also prevented Windows 7 from starting. I had to use my W7 rescue disk to get back in business. Once again adwcleaner stinks.
    DO NOT INSTALL!!!!!!!!!!

      Hi Allan,

Sorry that you had troubles with Adwcleaner. In looking up Desktop Temperature monitor, multiple sites listed this as the only way to clean it out completely. I did mention when using it to look through what it is erasing, so hopefully users will take that caution when they use it, so they don’t go through what you did.

I enjoyed reading this information, however I would like to know if the AdwCleaner and the Malwarebytes are available “free” to be downloaded???
I recently had the geek squad check out my computer and found over 400 malware in my computer that they removed. I need one of these programs. And when you delete the downloads there are duplicates like from Windows that have the same ID number but different kb’s downloaded on the same date. What’s with that?
