Removing Google Redirect

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 by | Filed Under: File & Disk Management, Security Help, Uncategorized

Dennis asks:

How do you remove Google-Redirect? What program do you recommend for a novice?

Hello Dennis, and thanks for the question. The Google Redirect Virus is a Trojan that attacks computers that have Google set as their home page, or use Google as their search engine. As you probably already know that is a lot of people, as Google is a very popular search engine. It works by hiding the search results that you would normally see, but instead shows you fake advertisements and other malicious sites. The sites you are redirected to offer rogue software for you to purchase and download. Of course, if you purchase anything from any of these sites you will get even more Trojans and spyware on your computer. If you are infected with this, you are also infected with a TDL3 rootkit.

Sounds like big mess, doesn’t it? Don’t worry. There are applications that will kill this virus, and remove it completely from your computer.

Download TDSSKiller here and save the zip file to your desktop. Right-click the folder and click Extract All to extract the files. Click Next twice then click Finish.

Next we need to rename the file. A folder will open showing you the extracted files. Find the TDSSKiller.exe file in the folder. Right-click the file and select Rename. Name the file whatever you want. For example, 84scan32.exe or 483202.exe. After you rename the file, double-click on it to install TDSSKiller.

When it finishes installing, make sure Services and drivers and Boot sections are checked and click Start Scan.

It will start to scan your computer for the Google redirect virus. When it is finished, a results screen will display. If any infected files were found, you will see a window similar to the one below.

Click Continue and TDSSKiller will remove the infected files. When it is finished, click the Reboot Now button to restart your computer.

The Google redirect virus should be gone now, but you should run a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan to remove any traces left behind. You can never be too careful, huh? Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will remove any traces of the virus left behind.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Download Malwarebytes here and choose to save the file to your desktop. When it is finished downloading, double-click the installation file to start the install. Make sure Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware are checked and click the Finish button.

Click OK to update and when it is finished updating, the main screen will open. The message, The database was successfully updated, will display on the screen.

Click the Scanner tab and select Perform full scan. Click the Scan button. The scan can take up to two hours, depending upon how infected your computer is. When it is finished scanning, a display window will open with a message that says the scan completed successfully.

Click Show Results and a screen will open that displays the malware found on your computer. Make sure that all boxes are checked and click the Remove selected button. When it finishes removing the infected files, a log will display on the screen. Click Close when you are finished looking at it.

The Google redirect virus should be gone. If you had any other spyware on your computer it will be gone too! We hope your computer is running much better now.
