Rename Several Files at Once

Have you ever been working on a project with information on several files? Maybe it was an annual report with files from different departments. Or perhaps you unloaded the pictures from your camera and would like to find the ones of your grandchildren easier. This tip works with every type of file and will help you give them all the same name. I’m sure you will find other uses for this once you see how to do it.

Find the files you want to rename. If you don’t know exactly where they are, right-click on Start and left-click on Explore . Have a look around until you find them.

When you’ve found your files, select them. You can do this by drawing a box around them with your mouse or holding down Ctrl and clicking the files you want to rename. (To select all the files in a folder, hold Ctrl and press A ).

Right-click on the first of the files you’ve selected and left click on Rename .

Then type in a name for your files and press Enter . And—HEY PRESTO!—they’ve all been renamed, freeing up plenty of time for a nice nap.

Alright—so you’ve probably noticed that all the files don’t have exactly the same name. Windows just doesn’t like you doing that. But it’s good enough for me. Oh, and don’t go renaming a whole load of files just for fun—I don’t know any quick way to change them back!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off for a lie down…
