Renaming Audio Files

I have messed around with my MP3’s and labeled them, but when I play them on Windows Media Player or some other player, instead of showing e.g. Bob Day – Happy Days.mp3, it shows e.g.Track 10.mp3 .  I thought it was an MP3 tag problem, so I downloaded a tag software and used that.  Back to the media players and it’s still track 10.mp3.  Do you know how to fix this so that I can see my own labels on the songs that I have messed with? Thanks.

Greetings, sir Al of Smith!  Thanks for the excellent question!

This is not only something that plagues more than just you, but also something that I struggled with myself a few years back.  I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and let me tell you… when they’re out of order, the book doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.  So I had one book where tracks 1 – 9 were labeled exactly like that: 1, 2, 3 etc.  The problem is that the way that some MP3 players (including my phone) plays those is 1, 10, 11. 2, etc… reading the integers in order.

So I went through in Windows and renamed them 01, 02, 03…  That should have fixed the problem, (since the integer zero comes before the integer 1), but It didn’t.  When I went to listen to it the next day, same problem.

So, a little dinking around with Windows and I discovered the solution.  Here it is…

Open your music folder and then go to the album with the songs that you’d like to display properly.  Right-click on the file and click on Properties.

Next, click on the file header Details.

The very top option here is Title.  Make sure that it’s correct.  If it’s not, skip the next step and go straight to the fix below.  If it is, scroll down to the File subheader.  The top option here is Name

You’d think that TITLE and NAME would be the same, wouldn’t you?  In this example, they are.  If they’re not, then simply click anywhere in the field containing the incorrect name (track 10 in your example) and change it to whatever you want it to be.  Click Apply at the bottom and you’re good to go.

Hope that this helps.

Terrific explanation and I hope it’s available in archives when I get my mp3.
