If you’ve decided it’s time to upgrade to a new Android or iPhone, you could either trade your old phone in or sell it. But there’s another great option if you have kids. You can re-purpose that phone at a WiFi only device. Your child will then have a nice digital camera, a perfectly good music player and eReader and a tablet to play games on. After you’ve deactivated the device as a phone. You can make it great for kids with just a few steps.
If you like, you can control keep the WiFi turned off, so they can’t surf the Internet or play games , but can still use the camera, play music that’s already been downloaded onto the phone and read books that are downloaded.
You’ll want to create a restricted user account. In Android, got to settings and choose add user. Then create a restricted account.
If your phone doesn’t have that feature, go to the Google Play store, select Settings and then choose Parental controls.
Turn Parental controls on.
You can then select a PIN number.
Select what types of media are allowed to be downloaded.
Press Require Authentication to make sure that a child can’t purchase any apps or media without a password.
On your iPhone, you can go to Manage Family and select “Create an Apple ID for a child who doesn’t have an account.”
You’ll want to make sure you disable the ability to purchase apps and media from the phone, especially if you have a very young child who might not realize they are purchasing something.
Your child will then have a very nice camera, media player, and eReader at no additional cost to you.
Remember, if you re-assign the phone number and drop the phone plan, your child can’t use the phone to call 9-1-1. If they’re using WiFi and have a messaging app, they could still contact you with a message, but they won’t be able to call the police in an emergency.
