The race is on for the latest generation of smartphones, and Sony has an impressive entry with the Xperia Z1S exclusively at T-Mobile. This phone is reminiscent of many other phones out on the market, yet is still undeniably a Sony product.
One of the most impressive and immediately noticeable features of the Z1S is its design. The front and back glass covers are joined together by a durable aluminum frame, which has the two-tone shading reminiscent of other Sony products. The full HD 1080 x 1920p screen boasts a 16 million color contrast ratio making it great for movies and games alike, according to GSM Arena. It also is protected by a scratch resistant cover; however, this does affect the picture quality when viewing the screen at an angle.
When closed, the phone is fully dust and water resistant to a depth of over 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. With thousands of phones damaged or destroyed every year due to water damage, this can be a huge advantage. But, the waterproofing does affect the sound quality of the built in speakers.
The smartphone also features a 20.7-megapixel camera as well as increased camera software capability. When added to the water resistant design, this allows you to take pictures and video virtually anywhere. Phone Arena displays a gallery of unedited, underwater snorkeling photos, which photographer Carol Grant says were easy to take. The review states that when blown up, the images lose detail and have visible noise, but coming from an underwater smartphone, they are still pretty good.
The latest Sony phone comes equipped with a 3000 mAh battery, which allows for full day usage. At only 169 grams in weight, its sleek design allows for easy portability and usage. Furthermore, the 2.2 GHz quad-core processor makes it one of the fastest phones on the market, and Android’s 4.3 Jellybean OS makes navigation easy.
Apps and Entertainment
Sony is definitely catering to its loyal fans while still reaching out to new users with this phone. For example, they know that cameras are an important feature of new smartphones, so they reworked and updated their camera apps with more accurate face recognition as well as improved capturing, editing and sharing capabilities.
It also is preloaded with the Xperia Lounge, which gives you access unique music options. Plus, the Sony PlayStation App allows you to connect to all your favorite games and friends right through your phone. But, unfortunately, the high powered apps can take their toll, even on the beefed up processor. The phone lags slightly or slows if too many apps or programs are open at once.
All in all, it’s a fantastic phone. Despite its slow start into the smartphone race, the Z1S promises to make a good showing. Its durable design, great technology and upgrades by far overshadow the few drawbacks, and it is sure to be a contender.
