Scammers Target System Mechanic Customers

Wednesday, December 17th, 2014 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips, Security Help

Iolo, the company behind System Mechanic has issued a warning to consumers. Scammers posing as representatives of the company are calling people at home and saying they have been alerted to errors, trouble signals or malware on the computer and need to gain access to it.

This scam is very similar to the one where crooks use Microsoft’s name. Click here to read an article on that scam.

Crooks either want to gain access to your information or trick you into spending hundreds of dollars on unnecessary services.

Iolo wants to make it clear that they do not make unsolicited calls to their customers and they don’t have the ability to monitor your PC.  It’s highly unlikely that customer support for any product would call your home. You call them, they don’t call you.

These days, it is very easy to get the list of mobile & e-mail users. Whenever you install a freeware including from mail service providers, you get the “I’ve read and agreed to the T&C”. This includes sharing your details with their ‘associates’!Some T&Cs even include a tracking software to monitor your internet activities and sell that information to marketers (aka Spammers). Don’t you receive junk calls/messages routinely on your phone? Most of us do!
