I keep seeing the name SeaMonkey everywhere, but I don’t have the slightest idea what it is. Can you please inform me?

I sure can! To be honest, the whole idea behind SeaMonkey had me confused at first too. I had a general idea of what it was, but after doing some research, I wasn’t able to pinpoint down a decent explanation. But after compiling everything I found, I’m pretty sure I have a good answer to give you all for today’s question. So, what do you say we jump right into it? Let’s go!

Basically, SeaMonkey is an all-in-one Internet application suite. Now, I know you’re probably thinking, “Well, that’s great, but I don’t even know what that means!” All in all, it means that SeaMonkey offers up several different applications that you can use on your computer, all from one single location. For example, SeaMonkey includes a Web browser, an advanced e-mail program, a newsgroup client, an IRC chat service and even an HTML editing helper. That’s quite a list, isn’t it?! And again, all of that is included with just one quick download.

Right now, the most recent version of SeaMonkey is 1.1.2, which was released just this past May of 2007. There have been several different versions over the past couple of years (starting back in 2005), but the newest one has a lot of extra features and it has fixed a lot of the known security issues that hung around in the other versions. SeaMonkey 1.1.2 is also much more stable than the earlier releases, which is always a definite plus!

SeaMonkey also works with Windows, Macs and even Linux. For Windows, it works with the operating systems of 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT 3.51, NT 4.0, 2000, 2003 and XP. As of right now, it does not work with Windows Vista. If you’re using a Mac, SeaMonkey requires the Mac OS X 10.2 or later and most of the library versions in Linux will work with it. You can find all the system requirements, installation notes, etc. right here. If you’re having any problems getting SeaMonkey to install on your computer, you’ll definitely want to check that page out. There’s detailed instructions, which can really save you in a bind.

Now that all of that is out of the way, let me give you a little history on this all-in-one application suite. SeaMonkey is actually a continuation of the former Internet suite of Mozilla Application Suite. Although it has taken over for that, it is still managed by the Mozilla Foundation and it is completely community driven. However, there is a new group leader called the SeaMonkey Council, which is gradually taking over everything.

Right now, the SeaMonkey Council is working on the SeaMonkey Project, which is “a community effort to deliver production quality releases of code derived from the application formerly known as Mozilla Application Suite.” The Mozilla Foundation focused mainly on the Firefox and Thunderbird applications, so the SeaMonkey Council is working hard to deliver “everything but the kitchen sink” with their SeaMonkey program.

If you want to download SeaMonkey for yourself, you can do so here. Look for the big green box at the very top of the page on the right hand side. Just select the operating system you’re using and click on its link. Then just go through the install like you normally would and you’ll be all set. Once you’ve got it on your computer, you can start to enjoy everything you love to do on your computer, all in one easy to access application. It really is a good deal, don’t you think? Check it out today and get in on the SeaMonkey madness!
