Setting Default Font Sizes in Outlook

Monday, April 18th, 2011 by | Filed Under: E-Mail Help

Trish asks:

How do I reset the default font size for typing out emails in Microsoft Outlook 2007, as I have to type it in Word for me to be able to read the email I am sending and copy it into Outlook to send?

In an earlier tip, we discussed how to reset default font sizes in Windows Live Mail, and one of our readers asked the question above.

Trish, after reading this, you should be able to skip that cumbersome first step, and type your emails directly into Outlook 2007 in a readable type size.

First, in the Tools menu, select Options.

In the Options dialog box, under the Mail Format tab, click the Stationery and Fonts…. button

In the Signatures and Stationery dialog box, under the Personal Stationery tab, click on either of the Font… buttons. The choices are New mail messages and Replying or forwarding messages. If you want to adjust the default font size for all outgoing mail, you’ll need to make changes to both.

In the Font dialog box, under the Font tab, you can select from Font:, Font style:, and Size:

Here, Arial was chosen as the font in regular style, at 11 points. As you can see below, plenty of other changes can also be added to font defaults; color, underline, etc. Clicking on the Character Spacing tab will offer even more possibilities for default settings.

Now, take it for a spin. If you’re not happy with the results, follow the steps again to adjust the fonts to your liking.

Thanks for the question, Trish. By the way, if you’d rather not make all these changes, you can also deal with the fine print in Outlook by using the advice in the tip, Zoom Using the Scroll Wheel.
