Setting Up Mac Mail For Use With Popular Email Providers

Mac Mail is the Apple’s equivalent to Microsoft Outlook; it’s the email client that comes on every Mac you buy. What I like about it is that it’s incredibly easy to set up and use, and instead of having to log in to my email every time and struggle with the clunky interface to move files around and sort through my mail, I just open Mac Mail and get on with it.

So lets get yours set up and teach you the basics.

When you open Mac Mail for the first time you are presented with the setup screen.

If you have email accounts already setup, but you’re not sure how to add more go to Mail–> Preference:

Click on the + symbol in the left-hand corner of the box.

If you have never opened Mac Mail before, you will be presented with this window when you open the application.

To se tup Mac Mail with popular email accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and iCloud accounts, simply fill out your full name and email address along with your password, click Continue and Mac Mail will fetch all the settings that it needs to set up your email account.

The next screen you see should present you with a ‘create’ button, Mac Mail will then set up your mail account and start importing all your emails and folders.

Note: If you don’t see this screen, just double check you have entered your details in correctly.

Once it’s all set up you will be ready to start emailing directly from Mac Mail. Here you can set up folders and organize your emails directly on your Mac.One of the benefits to this is that your mail will always be available even when you don’t have access to the Internet. You can also write emails and get them lined up ready to send, so next time you get access to the Internet, Mac Mail will send them all out for you.

A Quick Note For Hotmail Users: If you have a Hotmail email account, you will need to note that Microsoft uses an old system which doesn’t allow Mac Mail to sync with it properly, meaning if you open your emails in Mac Mail and delete one or two those emails will still appear when you log in to Hotmail next time.

Downloading New Emails And Composing New Ones

At the top of the Mac Mail window on the left-hand side, you will find two buttons that will be very useful. The first is a button to download new messages; click it once and Mac Mail will check your inbox to see if you have any new messages to be downloaded. The second button is to compose new emails, click it and a ‘new message‘ window will open ready for you to get started.

Note: If you have more than one email account setup in Mac Mail just double check which email account that email is being sent from.
