Shockwave Error – What’s Causing The Problem?

Thursday, August 15th, 2013 by | Filed Under: Using The Internet

Sue from Mifflintown, Pennsylvania writes:

The computer keeps stopping because it said shock wave quit working and then it gives me a choice to continue waiting or stop. Why does it keep happening is it the Internet server or something wrong with my computer.

Thank You

Sue, it doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with your computer or with your Internet. The problem is a program called Shockwave Flash. It enables you to view some websites and do things like watch videos and play games. But it looks like there’s an issue with your program.  Shockwave Flash is known to have issues with crashing and some browsers actually disable it by default. In fact, Android stopped supporting Flash in the most recent version of their operating system.

Let’s take a look at what you can do to solve the problem.   You don’t say which browser you are using, so I’ll do a little troubleshooting for Internet Explorer.  One issue could be the ActiveX Filter in Internet Explorer.

Select Settings > Safety> ActiveX Filter.

If ActiveX Filtering is checked, try unchecking it and see if that takes care of the problem. ActiveX controls are small programs that allow websites to provide content like videos, but they can also be used to collect information from your computer.

You can check out what types of add-ons you’re running on your computer by going to Settings>Manage Add-Ons  in Internet Explorer.

Select Toolbars and Extensions and you’ll see a list of programs.

You’ll see Adobe Shockwave Flash on the right.

If you click on it, in the bottom pane, you’ll see information about the program, including the version number and whether or not that extension is enabled on your computer. If a program is giving you issues, you can always disable it.

To make sure you are running the latest version of Flash,  go to the Flash Player Support Center page. You can update the program and find fixes to known bugs.

If none of these steps help, you could also try uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Play.  In your search box type uninstall a program and then click on that result when it comes up.

The uninstall or change a program window will open.  Type shockwave in the search box.  The program will then appear in the results below. Select Shockwave and you’ll be given the option to uninstall.

Once you have uninstalled the program, you can return to the Adobe  at this link and download Shockwave Player again.
