Would you like to know what’s happening in your Vista or Windows 7 computer right now? For a quick read on current activity and performance, follow the steps below.
First, open the Run dialog box, by holding the Windows key and typing R (Win+R).
In the Run box, type cmd and hit the Enter key.
This will open the Command Prompt.
In Command Prompt, type perfmon /report
This opens the Resource and Performance Monitor and begins the data collection process.
The report shown below will then appear. Each bar represents different types of data and can be opened by clicking the arrow on the right.
And you’ve completed a quick and easy activity and performance check. Congratulations.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials, but the Monitor doesn’t recognize it and says I don’t have any anti-virus protection. I Googled this and find it is a longstanding problem experienced by many even in Vista. This tells me I can’t have any confidence in the Monitor.
Great tip. Wish it worked. Get a statement saying I do not have permission to run it. Even though I am local and domain admin. Go figure…
I am using Windows 7 Enterprise x64 and went to the command line in the Accessories Menu in All Programs, then entered the command. I had no problem running this tip and received the same screen as Kevin at the end. In the meantime while it was running, it tells you Resource and Performance Monitor at the top, and under Report Status, there is a dial gauge with a green taskbar saying “Collecting data for 60 seconds…” I am logged in as Administrator all the time, and the only user of this PC.
