I keep hearing a strange sound coming from my computer? I don’t think it’s coming from my hard drive. Where else could it be?

If your computer is making some weird noises and you’ve already checked in different places (your hard drive, boot up system, hardware, etc.), your problem may lie within your fan. If you listen closer to the fan areas on your computer, a light bulb may have just gone off in your head and you’re saying, “That’s it!” Who would’ve thought?

With Summer coming up and hotter temperatures making their way into our homes, it’s a good idea to make sure you have no errors with your computer’s fan. The problem could be with the motherboard fan spinning too slowly or maybe it’s just working too hard without enough cooling. If a fan doesn’t have enough time to cool down, it could easily fry itself.

So, if you’re thinking you need some sort of program that can change your computer’s fan speeds, something that can read the temperatures of your motherboard and hard disk, one that can read voltages and fan speeds AND check the status of your hard disk, you are probably looking for SpeedFan.

SpeedFan is a utility that basically lets you see deeper into the status of your computer. It can help you narrow down reasons for odd noises, unexpected reboots, hang ups or failing hard disks. It also works a lot with temperature related issues and it helps quiet fan noise so it’s not so disturbing. SpeedFan works with the SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) and SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) attributes within your computer. It performs searches on your computer’s motherboard, some video cards and every recently used hard disk for a full system scan.

Along with all of that, its main quality is that it is able to control fan speeds in reference to the temperatures inside your computer, which mainly reduces any noise. It is able to see the actual rpm (revolutions per minute) of each fan inside your computer, so you can track down the problem even further.

SpeedFan runs on Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, 2003 and XP, along with Windows 64 bit. It is a free program available for downloading. The current version is SpeedFan 4.28 and if you think this is a tool you could get great use out of, you can download it here.

Please note that some programs like Norton Internet Security and ZoneAlarm may interfere with the download process. Make sure you have any settings that may block this download unlocked or it won’t be able to complete.
