Splitter Light 4.0

Friday, November 10th, 2006 by | Filed Under: File & Disk Management

Splitter Light 4.0

To begin, let’s say you want to copy a document that is approximately 2 MB in size from one computer to another. For this, you will probably look toward your USB flash drive or a CD. You can’t use either a a floppy disk or even zip it, because your document is too large. If you still tried to copy the file to a floppy disk, you would get the following error message:

So, what if you only have a floppy disk drive and no other alternative devices (like a flash drive or a CD drive?) It’s going to be a big pain to move that file from one computer to another, isn’t it? So, basically, you need some sort of utility that will help you break that file into pieces so that you are able to copy the various parts onto a floppy disk. How helpful would that be in these types of situations?!

Well, this is where Splitter Light 4.0 comes in. It is a utility that will help you do just that. With Splitter Light, you can break your documents into smaller pieces and then copy them onto two or more floppy disks so they eventually combine to make one singe file. This will obviously put your document back to the way it was before, on the destination computer. Sounds good, right?!

Splitter Light is compatible with all Windows operating systems (Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and 2003). Awesome! You can download Splitter Light right here.

Okay, so now let’s see how we can split a file that is 2 MB in size onto two floppy disks and then combine them back to make one single file. The following will be the executable file, which is just 55 KB in size. It needs to be copied onto one of the floppy disks you have.

  • Once you have Splitter Light downloaded, browse to find the document you need to split. Look at the below screenshot for some help with this. Depending on the size of your file, it will be split into two or more pieces that can then be accommodated onto two or more floppies. The Output Directory path will be generated automatically, but can be changed if needed.

  • Click Split and you will get the following screen for confirmation.

  • Click Yes.
  • Now, you will notice that your file was split, along with one header file.
  • Copy the first file (which has the extension of .doc.001) to the first floppy and put the remaining files (.doc.002, .doc.h00 and Splitter.exe) on the second floppy.

Note: Here, the files with extension .doc.001 and .doc.002 are the original files that were split into two. The file with extension .doc.h00 is the header file that contains information about the split file and the Splitter.exe file is the utility that is going to help combine the file on your other PC.

  • The files are now copied onto the floppy disks, so go to your other computer where these files need to be copied and pasted onto the desktop (or any other location you prefer).
  • Double click on the Splitter.exe file and provide the path where you have copied those split files and click Join.
  • You will now get the following confirmation to rejoin the files to make it look the same as it was before. Click Yes.

  • Now you can find the file in its original state and size.

Note: Make sure you copy the header file to the last floppy where you copy the last split piece. Make sure to copy the Splitter.exe file to the destination computer.

Check this out for yourself and see how well it works!
