Spotify: Private Listening

Thursday, September 22nd, 2016 by | Filed Under: Free Downloads, Multimedia, Smartphones

I’m a big fan of the music streaming service Spotify. In fact, I’m listening to it right now while I write this tip.

One of the great features of Spotify is that is learns your preferences by what you play. If you’ve played a song before, you’re likely to hear it again. Or Spotify will seem out similar artists for you to listen to.  But that can also be a problem.

We all have that friend who comes over and plays the most embarrassing songs that we otherwise would never want to listen to. But the problem here is that if they play songs or artists that you don’t particularly care for, it will ruin your Spotify experience (as similar recommendations will pop up), not to mention the fact that it will appear on your Spotify & Facebook profiles.

In such a case you can run Spotify in a private session, which is similar to Chrome’s incognito mode. None of your private session activity ever shows up on your Spotify profile, neither are those songs used for taste analysis.

For the webplayer, click the Settings icon on the bottom left.

Then check the box next to Private Session.

If you are using the desktop version, then click the top down arrow on top right and select ‘Private Session’.

On the iPhone, go to the ‘Your Library’ section, select ‘Settings’, select ‘Social’ and switch ‘Private Session’ to on. On the iPad simply tap the settings button and tap to turn the ‘Private Session’ to on.

If you have an Android device then tap the menu button, tap ‘Settings’ and switch ‘Private Session’ to on. Lastly, if you are using the web player then click the settings icon that is on the bottom left and put a check mark next to ‘Private Session’.

This also comes in handy when you want to listen to songs that you don’t want appearing in your history or on your Facebook profile.
