I just bought a Toshiba Thrive tablet 32 gb. With my computer I delete cookies and temporary files and do a defrag. Should I do the same with a tablet computer?

Tablets are such a new device type that many people have the same question: “What should I do to maintain it?”

Well here is a bit of good news: Not a lot. Tablet computers use flash memory and do not require any form of defragmenting. Most tablet operating systems also automatically clear out temporary files stored after a certain limit is reached and intelligently manage the storage space available. Having said that, what kind of maintenance should you perform?

Delete Unused Applications: While applications that aren’t used don’t slow down a tablet, they do take up limited storage space. If you downloaded an application and decided it wasn’t for you, uninstall it.

Clean the Device: Glass touchscreens can be cleaned with a microfiber cloth and LCD cleaning solution. One part often left ignored is the dock and headphone connectors. Using a light burst of canned air, spray out anything that’s gotten stuck in those connectors. You can also use the end of a plastic flossing stick to scrape any residue from around buttons/switches.

Don’t leave it uncharged for a long time: Batteries, especially those used in most tablets, can be damaged by long duration storage at very low power levels. If you are planing to put your tablet into storage charge it to about 50% then turn the device completely off.

Android Specific: Android operating systems can get malware and viruses, so it’s helpful to install and run a virus scan application. A popular choice is AVG Antivirus Free for Android available in the Google Play store here [1].
