Taking Control of Selections in Word XP

I’m sure most of you know that the Ctrl key can be a very powerful tool when highlighting non-adjacent items in a list or cells in MS Excel.

And I would also venture to say that at some point, you’ve been very frustrated with MS Word, because it just does not cooperate in the same way on this issue.

Word only wants to highlight consecutive pieces of text, which leads to a lot of repetitive work, as you have to keep going back and forth to copy or move the sections of text.

Well, beginning with Word XP, you can now save a bit of time and energy.

You will find that the Ctrl key will now allow you to highlight non-adjacent sections of text in Word in the same way you can highlight non-adjacent cells in Excel.

Simply highlight the first bit of text, hold down the Ctrl key and use the mouse pointer to highlight the next section of text. As long as you hold down the Ctrl key, you can keep adding pieces to the pile.

When it’s all been highlighted, you’re free to proceed with the usual work (copy or cut and paste, formatting, whatever you need). Only the parts of the text that are highlighted will be affected by the changes. Everything in between will be left as is.

It’s time to take “control” of Word!
