Everyone is going gaga over Android 4.0 and its Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) firmware update. Wondering what is it all about? Here are the distinctive advantages of owning the latest Android phone, be it the Sony, Samsung or HTC.
Chrome browser: Yes, the superfast browser is available for ICS users. Take that to mean a more efficient browser that mimics your desktop and offers more internet computing power in the palm of your hand.
Resize the widgets: Yes, the Touch Wiz launcher is at your beck and call. You can resize some of the stock widgets like weather, digital photo frame, news and so on. The result: A more personalized, custom launcher.
Voice navigation: If you live in the US, you can now make the most of the voice navigation of Google Maps. That means, turn by turn navigation without the help of a standalone GPS device. However, if you live in places like India, you won’t get this feature, as Google Navigation is yet to take off here.
Unlocking phone: Yes, you’ve heard it and it works. Facial recognition to unlock your phone. However, it’s still early days yet. The phone recognizes you only at a certain angle and distance. Thankfully, when facial recognition fails to identify you, you have to key in the pass code or pattern.
Video chat on google+ hangouts: This is mightily helpful and user-friendly. You can chat up to 10 people simultaneously. Just download the Google+ app and you are good to go.
Offline search in Gmail: If you have the Gmail app, you can now do offline search, even when there is internet available.
Data usage monitor: Now, you don’t have to download data usage apps to know how far away you are from exhausting your data limit. The ICS version has this inbuilt and accessible through the Settings icon. You can monitor web traffic for both the data and wifi modes.
New Roboto font: Now, you don’t even have to go hunting for a better, smoother system font for your Android phone. The new Roboto font that comes with the ICS is buttery-smooth and just perfect compared to its predecessors.
Zero shutter lag: If you are complaining about the shutter lags before the system camera clicks the pictures, the ICS version solves it with almost no shutter lag. This means, faster picture taking and fewer blurry images.
