The PC Question You Should Be Able To Answer

Monday, February 1st, 2016 by | Filed Under: Computer Terms, I've Always Wanted To Know..., Mac OS, Windows 10

You don’t have to be a computer genius to use a PC, they are pretty user-friendly. But, there are some basic things about your PC you need to know. You don’t have to be a mechanic to drive a car, but it helps to know the make and model when you’re looking for tires or trying to troubleshoot an issue.

Here’s one important question you should be able to answer:

What OS are you using?

Is your PC Windows, Mac, Linux or maybe even a Chromebook? This information is important for any troubleshooting, but also for purchasing programs or apps and peripherals like external drives.

Once you know your operating system, it’s also important to know what version of that operating system you’re using.  Here’s how to find out. For a Windows 7 PC you can right-click on Computer under File Explorer and choose Properties.

A window will open telling you what version of Windows you’re running. It also contains important information about your processor and the amount of RAM on your computer that can come in handy when troubleshooting.

If you’re running Windows 8.1, type PC Settings on your Start Screen or into your search box. Tap on the results.

Then choose PC Info.

You’ll see the edition as well as your Processor and Ram information.

For Windows 10, Type About Your PC into your Start menu and click on the result.

You’ll see the information for your OS, as well as information about he RAM and processor.

If you’re running a Mac, go to your Apple menu and choose About This Mac to see the information. You can also look under System Information.

What OS are you using? Let’s rule out the two most obvious answers: 1) No, it is not the ‘Black One’ under my desk; 2) No, it is not in the shape of a ‘Lap-Top’ … there that should make it easier.
