The Quilts of Gee’s Bend

Quilting is a tradition that historical significance all over the world. The earliest known quilting comes from Egypt and Mongolia. Historians believe that Crusaders brought quilting back from the Middle East and that the tradition continued to develop from there. In America quilting has its own traditions as well. Pioneers who settled out West used paper for the batting (inner layer of the quilt). African American women created a unique type of quilting – story quilts. These quilts are similar to the Amish tradition of quilting, but today we’re going to look at the Quilts of Gee’s Bend.

Once you arrive at the main page I would recommend that you start by clicking on the section Did You Know? or the section Learn About Gee Bend’s History. These sections will provide you with historical context for the quilts you’ll be checking out next, as well as some very interesting tidbits about Gee’s Bend.

Next, I would recommend clicking Quiltmakers, because you can learn more about the craft and how the quilts are made in their community. After that, head on over to the Quilts section, but don’t be dismayed when it looks like nothing is there – you have to click the Click Here [1] link to see the quilts currently in the gallery. You can find more images of the Quilts of Gee’s Bend here [2].

In the Did You Know section they mention the government sending photographers to document Gee’s Bend, if you’d like to see those images and the history surrounding then you can check out this site [3].
