The Risks Of Using A Nanny Cam

Yesterday we looked at how a nanny cam can help keep your loved ones safe. But there are some downsides to this technology. Let’s take a look:

Cons of Nanny Cams

Even though a nanny cam is a great way to add security, there are some important legal and other considerations that shouldn’t be overlooked before you make your decision.

  • Using a nanny cam may negatively affect your relationship with caretakers if they feel that you don’t trust them. Be sure to communicate that the camera is there for safety, not for spying.
  • While it is legal in every state to use a hidden camera in your home, nanny cams have some restrictions. Recording oral communication without permission is often illegal, so you may want to look for a camera that only records video. Some states also require you to notify the caregiver that there is a camera in your home, so be sure to check your state’s laws.
  • Nanny cams can violate a caregiver’s privacy. To avoid this, make sure you don’t place cameras in areas that are considered private, like bathrooms.
  • Because nanny cams only see what’s happening in a designated area of your home, you may not get the whole story when you review the video. You could see your baby crying unattended, but not see that your nanny was preparing a bottle—so be sure to talk to your caregiver rather than jump to conclusions.

Risks of Nanny Cams

Installing a nanny cam can provide security and alleviate concerns, but using a hidden camera comes with certain risks. From legal issues to online hackers, be sure you understand the potential hazards of using a nanny cam in your home.

  • To avoid potential legal issues, you may want to use a contract to ensure that the caregiver consents to being recorded—especially if your camera captures both audio and video. A contract is also helpful if you live in a state that requires caregivers in your home to be informed of a hidden camera.
  • Wireless nanny cams can be hacked, which could allow strangers to monitor your family’s behavior and potentially interact with your children. You can counter this cybersecurity threat by encrypting your Wi-Fi and using strong passwords.
  • Remember that the purpose of recording your nanny or other caregiver is to prevent negligence or abuse, not catch someone in the act. Instead of obsessing about potential wrongdoing, use your camera to quickly address concerns and take corrective action.

Ultimately, the choice to use a nanny cam is personal. Consider your feelings about hidden cameras, your concerns about in-home caregivers, and your ability to deal with the potential risks. When it comes to protecting your family, pets, and home, it’s smart to take precautions—a nanny cam is a convenient, reliable way to keep the people you love safe.
