CMOS - Short for complementary metal oxide semiconductor. It's a special type of semiconductor that requires less power than conventional materials. Your PC has what's called CMOS memory. It's used to store basic information, like time, date, number of drives, and other machine parameters. It's often powered by a small battery inside your computer, so if you find your computer is asking you what time it is every time you boot, you probably need to replace that battery.
