DOS - DOS (Disk Operating System), was probably the first widely used computer operating system. It is completely text based (sorry, no pointing and clicking here). Until Win 95 came along, you needed to have DOS running in order to run Windows (win 3.x). Additionally, some applications (especially games) are still DOS based. Since some programs still require a DOS operating environment, Windows offers it. You can also work from a regular DOS prompt by hitting the Start menu, Programs, MS DOS prompt. Here's what a windows DOS prompt looks like (take away the window for a "real" DOS prompt :-):
