Processor -

Your computer's processor is the "thinking" part of your computer. It's usually the biggest chip on your motherboard and is the main component for keeping the hardware in line and running your software.

When people talk about how fast the a computer is, they usually refer to processor speed.

Processor speed is basically used to measure how quickly a chip can execute instructions. The higher the number, the faster the chip.

Generally speaking, you probably don't need the fastest thing on the market. I'm still "chugging along" with my 500Mhz Pentium III and have no desire to upgrade at the moment. (OK, maybe a little desire).

Keep in mind that these new, high end chips are probably going to appeal to game junkies and folks who do lots of high-end graphics work. For those of us sending e-mail and surfing the web, we would be better off with more memory and faster modems.
