Scan Disk-

Scan Disk is used to check your hard drive for errors. If it finds an error, it attempts (usually successfully) to fix it. It's a good idea to periodically run it, particularly if your system is acting funny (well, funnier than usual).

I usually recommend that the "average: user (whatever that is) runs Scan Disk about once every month or so. You can usually find it if you hit your Start button, Programs, Accessories, System tools.
