Tip #1686 - Microphone Won't Work

Q:
I plugged in a microphone to my computer but I can't hear anything. How can I get it to work?

A:
It could be that the microphone is muted or not turned up.

Just double-click the little speaker in the system tray (down by the clock). You may see a slider control for the microphone. If not, then go to Options/Properties and check off "Microphone". It should now appear. Uncheck the "Mute" box and make sure you have the volume turned up.

You can do the same thing with "Line in" if you hook up a tape player to your sound card and nothing happens.

From there you can record your voice with either Sound Recorder (see today's tip) or your favorite sound editing program.
