Tip #2560 - NIC Cards Printer Friendly Version | E-Mail This Tip
NIC
Cards
You may often hear
the term "nic" being thrown around in reference to computers.
Ever wonder what it means? Well, NIC stands for Network
Interface Card. It is pronounced like "nick" and it
is basically the card that makes the physical connection between your
computer and a network cable.
NIC cards usually
go along with an Ethernet connection and they also come in different sizes;
those being 10, 100 and 1,000 Base-T configurations. (Base-T is one of
the several applications that are used along with an Ethernet connection.
A Base-T uses a twisted pair cable, which is thinner and a lot more flexible
to use). Just for an example, a 100 size can transfer data at 100 Mbps
(megabits per second) and so on.
These cards come in
both ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) and PCI (Peripheral Component
Interconnect) versions and are only made by a few companies. So, if you're
wanting to connect your computer into a network, you must have a NIC card
for that to be possible.
