Tip #2829 - Zip Disk Jam

Zip
Disk Jam
Do you use zip disks
often? (Read here
for some information on zip files if you're not sure). If you do, you
may have come across the problem of them getting stuck every now and again.
Am I right? It's probably one of the most frustrating things that's happened
with your computer too and I bet you all would just love an easy fix for
when (or if) it happens again. Well, you're in luck, because I've got
a couple things you can try.
Before you do anything,
you need to shut down your computer the proper way. Don't restart it,
but actually power it down by selecting Shut Down (or
Turn Off) from the Start menu. This
will cut off all the power to the zip drive so it can reset itself. Let
your computer sit for awhile and then turn it back on. Usually, the zip
drive will eject the disk when the computer is started back up from a
complete power off state.
If that doesn't work,
straighten out a paperclip and insert it in the little hole in front of
the zip drive. Do this until you feel a spring-like resistance. Then push
a little harder with the paperclip and with any luck, you will force the
drive to eject the disk. The first method works the best, so make sure
you try that first, because it will work about 99 percent of the time.
Now, if your zip drive happens
to be making any loud clicking noises, you may have a damaged drive and
you should then take it to a computer repair store for further assistance.
