iPod
Navigation
To sum up this article
in a few words right here, right now, I would say, "Don’t forget
to take your iPod the next time you go on a trip!" No, I'm not saying
this because I immensely care about your "on the road" entertainment,
but instead I want you to experience your iPod driving you around. Sound
confusing? Perfect! Okay, let me go further. Today, I am going to show
you how you can use your iPod as a navigational device.
This smart little
trick should work on your iPod Video, iPod Nano or iPod Photo. First,
we are going to use the Web site www.iPod-directions.com.
This site is essentially an online tool that exports online road map instructions
from the Internet and prepares them to be imported onto your iPod. Needless
to say, once you have the directions handy on your iPod, the only excuse
for you still losing your way just better be something else!
Now, say you have
to go driving from point A to point B in a city that you are visiting
and you don’t know the way. How do you figure it out? You simply
go to www.iPod-directions.com
and search on the map. Then you download the map and then import it to
your iPod for later use. Sound good? I thought it might, so let’s
get started with this.
Let's go to the Web
site. The first step is to search for the route using the form given on
the main page. In the example given here, I am trying to find my way from
the Goldwater Memorial Hospital to 281 Main Street in the middle of New
York City.

After entering the
information, click on the "Verify Directions"
button to preview your route. A new window will pop up with the route
or if you have entered some incorrect information, it will prompt you
to enter new information.
This Web site uses
the Yahoo! maps engine and brings you the visual route on the map, as
well as, written directions, as you can see in the screenshot below.

If the information
presented to you in the map is correct, you can move forward to the next
step. The second step is smooth like butter. You just need to click on
the "Get Directions" button on the main page
and it’s going to prompt you to download a zip file. Now, this is
the file that you need to extract and import to your iPod. From here on
out, you just extract the contents of the zip file to your iTunes photo
folder (or any other folder where you put such downloaded things) and
sync it with your iPod.
To sync it, connect
the iPod to your computer. If this is the first time you are doing this,
go to iTunes, Preferences and click
the iPod button. Click on the photos button and make
sure the “Synchronize Photos From” checkbox
is selected. From the pop up, select the folder that contains the photos
that you extracted from the zip file. Once you click OK,
these items will be transferred to your iPod.
This operation is
pretty simple and after doing it a couple of times, it should be extremely
easy. No more getting lost on your road trips! When it comes to your iPod,
all the streets have names, no matter what anyone else might say!
