Tip #3186 - Editing an Excel Hyperlink

Editing
an Excel Hyperlink
Do you have hyperlinks
in your MS Excel worksheets?
Ever try to click
on it for editing purposes? What happens?
Yep, that's right.
The link is activated and you're accidentally on your way to a Web site
or find that a new e-mail has opened. Either way, it's not what you wanted.
So, how exactly do
we edit the hyperlinks without activating them?
I suppose we could
choose to remove the hyperlink, edit the text and then turn it back into
a hyperlink, but nah, that's way too much work!
While I'm sure there's
a lot of ways to accomplish this task, there's a few I can think of that
aren't too troublesome.
One way that comes
to mind is to select the cell using the keyboard. If you maneuver the
cell selection with the page up/down and arrow keys, you'll be able to
select the cell without activating the link. Then use the F2 key to put
the cursor into the cell for editing the text.
But, what if you're
a person who primarily navigates with the mouse? The moment you click
that link, you're toast. Or maybe not.
Next time, click
and hold the mouse button down on the cell with the link. After
a couple of seconds, you'll notice the cursor change into a plus sign
and then you're free to release the mouse button. You'll find that the
cell has been selected without activating the link. Then use the F2 key
or the Formula bar to edit the text.
That's all there is
to it. Click and hold is your key to link text editing!
