Web
Site Week - Day 1
I have some great
news! Throughout all of this week, I will be showing you tips on how you
can make your own Web site as good as it can be. Now, many of you are
probably thinking, "But I don't have a Web site." No worries!
I am going to solve that problem for you today. You are going to learn
how to create your very own Web site for no cost whatsoever. There's no
need to waste any more time. Let's get started!
1.) First, you need
to plan out your Web site. It's a good idea to read this tip
before proceeding. It explains exactly how you should plan your site.
Here's what my plan looks like:

2.) To begin, you'll need to have a Google account. If you already have
one, just proceed to step number 2. If you don't have one, you can get
one here and
then proceed to step number 2.
3.) Go to the Web
site for the Google Page Creator, which is www.pages.google.com.
Now, type in your username and password and click Sign In.

4.) On the next page, read the Terms and Conditions, agree to them and
then click "I'm ready to create my pages."
5.) You will see a
screen similar to the one below. What I suggest you do is click the link
that says Back to Site Manager.

6.) Now, I think it's a good idea to create all of the pages you planned
in step 1. To do so, click Create a New Page and then
type in what you want your page's title to be. Next, select Create
and Edit.
7.) Then click Back
to Site Manager again and follow this process until you have
finished all your pages.
8.) Next, you can begin editing your pages. To edit them, click on the
Home page (which is the one that has the home icon on
it).
9.) Click the Change
Look link and a whole list of templates will appear. You can
check them out by pressing the Preview key. When you
have found one you like, click on it. To me, the Solitude Navy one stuck
out. It was simple and classy, so I chose it. You choose the one that
suits you best though!

10.) Now, click Change Layout and a few layouts will
pop up. Select the one you like. I liked the second one, because I thought
I could put all of my links on the side and the main content to the right
of that. You do what you want though. It's your Web site!
11.) Next, you can
start adding content to that page.

To the right of the
screen, there are tools to format the text and insert images.

12.) You can follow this same procedure for the rest of the pages as well.
When you're done making changes with the page and want them to be published
to the Web, click the Publish button.
Cool, huh?! And just
think, I'll be showing you ways to make your Web site even better all
this week!
As you may notice on your Control Panel board when you log in, your URL
will be there. Yes, a URL for your own Web site!
It's rather long,
especially if you want to tell someone about it or e-mail it to someone.
So, wouldn't it be much cooler if you could have your own domain? I mean,
which one would you rather give to your friends: neilp232.googlepages.com
or www.neils-site.co.nr? The second one is much more
professional and easier to remember. Well, I have more good news! You
can get your own free co.nr domain and it's 100 percent free too.
1.) First, go to www.freedomain.co.nr.

2.) Next, scroll down and type in your domain and click Check.

3.) If it is available, you will see the screen above. Read through the
Terms of Service, then click "I want to sign up for this
domain."
4.) Now, a short and
humorous English test will appear for you to answer. This is so that freedomain.co.nr
can verify that you speak English and can read the Terms of Service.
5.) Next, read over
the domain rules and check the box that says "I have read
and understood everything mentioned above and I agree with the Terms of
Service." Then click "I read and I agree!"
6.) Now, just fill
out some simple information and click Next Step. In the
Target field, type in your Google Web address (for example,
neilp232.googlepages.com). If you need any help understanding any other
field, click the question mark icon next to it.
7.) Confirm everything
on the next page and then click Complete.
8.) An e-mail will
be sent to your e-mail address with an activation code. At the very bottom
of the e-mail, copy (Ctrl + C) the activation code to your clipboard and
then click the link below it.
9.) On the page that
opens, type in your password and paste (Ctrl + V) the activation code
in.
10.) Now, as you read
in the Terms of Service, you are required to post a link to freedomain.co.nr
on your site. To do that, go to your homepage in the Google Page Creator.
Then go to the bottom of your page where you want the logo inserted. Once
you find a spot, click so your cursor goes there. I went to the footer
of the page and I suggest you do the same.
11.) Next, click Edit
HTML and a box will appear. Depending on whether or not you have
a footer, there may be text in the box. If you don't have a footer, there
will be two little snippets of text in there.
12.) Copy this text
to your clipboard and then paste it after the last text in the box:
<a href="http://www.freedomain.co.nr/"
target="_blank">
<img src="http://szencza.da.com.ru/but1.gif" width="88"
height="31" border="0" alt="Free Domains at .co.nr"
/></a>

13.) Now, click Save Changes and the banner will appear.
If you don't like its positioning, you can drag it somewhere else. I decided
to move it right under my links bar. After you click Publish,
the banner will also appear on your Web site.
There you have it. Can you believe you just created your own Web site?!
Make sure you stay tuned for the rest of this week to learn even more
about customizing your site and making it the best it can possibly be.
You're in for a real treat. See you tomorrow!
