Internet Radio: Is It the End?

Here's some information about Internet radio that you may find interesting. Read on!

They say the end of the Internet radio age is quickly approaching. But is it? Internet radio is usually a free radio broadcasting service that transmits the music and/or radio shows to your computer, all while you surf the Web. Most of these Internet radio stations are completely independent. They are usually ran by one or two people and they're only broadcast on the Internet. In recent years, Internet radio has become a very popular way for Internet surfers to listen to the music they enjoy listening to.

But recently, the Copyright Royalty Board raised the rates the Internet radio stations must pay for every song they broadcast on air. In turn, the broadcasters, filed an appeal of the decision in April, but in the end, they were denied.

The musicians, however, who have their music played on the Internet radio stations, have voiced their opposition to the Copyright Royalty Board’s rate increases. They are worried that these increases will force Internet radio stations to close, which will then prevent the stations from exposing their material to the general public.

The new royalty rates go into effect on July 15, 2007. Once that time comes around, any Internet radio stations that can’t pay for the new royalties will be forced to close their doors and stop their broadcasts.

Now, on the other hand, toward the end of April 2007, two representatives introduced the Internet Radio Equality Act, which will attempt to save the Internet radio industry. The SaveNewRadio coalition, a group working to keep the Internet radio industry alive and moving forward, praised this new bill. On July 15, 2007, we will see if the government has closed down any of the Internet Radio stations that we all frequently listen to online, while surfing the Web.

I know there's not much we can do about this, but I wanted to give you all the information. I guess them's the breaks!
