Spammer Caught
To begin, I just want
to let you know that this tip is a little different from what I normally
give you, but it was so interesting to me and I thought you all might
like to know about it too. I'm sure by now, several of you have already
read about this somewhere else, but just in case you haven't, I'm here
to give you the scoop!
Last week (around
May 31, 2007), a 27-year-old man, known for being one of the world's most
productive spammers was arrested on several charges. Robert Alan Soloway
was accused of sending out millions upon millions of spam e-mails to innocent
computer users. A federal grand jury then charged him with mail fraud,
wire fraud, e-mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering.
It was said that he has been infecting computers with junk e-mail since
the year 2003.
So, how'd he do it?
Well, it looks like Soloway used the networks of compromised computers
to send out bulk e-mails that urged people to use his Internet marketing
company to advertise their products. If someone clicked on the link he
gave, they would be directed to his Web site where he basically bragged
about his ability to send out millions of e-mail advertisements over a
15 day time period. He, of course, charged a lot of money to do this and
in the end, he was making the money and spamming everyone in sight. The
Feds have said that a lot of computer users will see a big decrease in
spam e-mail now that Soloway has been caught. Thank goodness!
