Greasemonkey
and Gmail
You've all heard of
Gmail, right? Many of you probably even use it! Gmail is very popular,
due to its large storage space, its simple interface and its ability to
be easily customized. Using the Greasemonkey
add on we talked about yesterday, I'm going to show you how to unlock
a lot of cool features in Gmail.
First, you need to
get the Greasemonkey add on and know how to install scripts. As I said
before, we talked about that yesterday, so you should be all set if you've
been reading the newsletter everyday. When you’re ready, I'm going
to show you nine super cool and amazing Greasemonkey scripts for Gmail.
Come check them out!
1.) Saved
Searches - You may find yourself constantly searching for the
same things in Gmail, so this add on allows you to list those searches
for easier access later on. It goes right over on the left of your screen,
along with the labels and contacts. You can install the script for this
here.

2.) Conversation Preview Bubbles - This script lets you
preview a Gmail conversation by just hovering over it. That way, you can
get an overview of the e-mail quickly and easily. In the preview bubble,
there are also text links that let you trash and archive your e-mails.
How great is that?! This feature has been included in Hotmail and Yahoo!
Mail for awhile and now, you can have it in Gmail too! Install the script
for this here.
3.) Label Colors - This script allows you to color code
your e-mail labels to make them easier for you to identify in your Inbox.
Just install the script and then rename the label in the following manner:
"Labelname #color. For example, if the name of the
label was "Newsletter," I'd rename the label to "Newsletter
#green" and the label would change to green. Just change
the green to whatever color you want! Install it here.

4.) Google
Reader Integration - If you use Google
Reader to view your RSS feeds, you may find it to be a hassle to go
to that specific Web site each time. Well, with this script, you can have
your feeds right on Gmail's Web site. It's much easier that way. The Reader
comes right below Gmail. Check it out! You can install the script for
it right here,
right now.

5.) Mailto Script - When people post their e-mail on
a page and you click on the link, doesn't Outlook or Outlook Express open
up? Wouldn't you like it to open in Gmail? Using this script, all e-mail
links will! Install the script and try it with this link: mailto:bill@microsoft.com.
Install the script here.
6.) Gmail
Random Signature - This one is one of my favorites! Install the
script and then log in to Gmail and click Settings. Scroll
down to where it says Signatures. You will see a new
box there that says Taglines. In the box, there will
be three dummy taglines, each separated by percent signs. Replace those
with your signatures and continue adding more. To add more, type the signature
and then hit Enter to go to a new line, type a percent
sign (%) and click Enter once again. Next, type in the
next random signature. Continue in this manner, while inserting a percent
sign after each signature. For example, here's what I typed in the box.
Do good, happiness
follows.
%
You must be the change you wish to see.
%
I can resist everything except temptation.
%
The greatest mistake you can make in life is to continually fear you
will make one.
%
You cannot get to the top by sitting on your bottom.
This tagline will
go below your Gmail signature. Pretty cool, huh?! You can install this
script here.

7.) Attachment Reminder - Have you ever said you were
going to attach something in an e-mail and then you forgot to? Everyone
has! This nifty script reminds you if you write "attach" in
an e-mail and don't attach a file. This can be a real lifesaver. You can
install this script from this link.

8.) Gmail Macros - This is the all time best Gmail script!
It makes the Gmail shortcuts much easier. Not only does it add shortcuts
for things that Gmail doesn't include, like moving e-mails to the trash
and marking a conversation as read, but it also has a quick label chooser.
Just click the label hotkey and start typing the label name and the label
will be applied. To view all of the shortcuts after you have this script
installed, just press the letter "h." You can install this script
right from here.

9.) Secure Connection - This Greasemonkey script allows
you log in to the secure version of Gmail's Web site. Install it and then
check the address bar the next time you log in. It will say https://,
instead of just http://. For more information on secure
sites, check out this article.
Then install the script here.

10.) Gmail TinyURL Shortcut - If you've ever pasted a
long URL into Gmail, it sometimes runs right off the screen. Instead of
opening a new window to convert it into a TinyURL, this Greasemonkey script
lets you highlight the URL, hit Ctrl + Shift + T and
it is automatically converted into a TinyURL. Amazing, huh?! To read more
about services like TinyURL, click here.
You can then install this script here.
Bonus Script!
11.) Filter
Assistant - Filter Assistant lets you create a filter on the
fly, using the criteria straight from a message. I've already used this
extension a couple of times and let me tell you, it's so helpful in creating
new filters. I bet you can already see how this one could come in handy,
right? Install this script here.

I hope you have enjoyed all of these Gmail scripts. Have fun!
