Refresh Rate Basics

So, I was looking in our computer tip archives the other day and found a tip on the term "refresh rate." I was reading through it and although it was very helpful, it didn't give just the basics of what the refresh rate really is. And I figured a lot of you would probably want to know, so that's exactly what I'm going to do for you today. Let's get back to the basics, baby!

In terms of computers, the refresh rate is the number of times per second that the display on your computer monitor is illuminated. Now, even though this goes along with the term "frame rate," I don't want you to get the two confused. The frame rate measures how often a display changes from one image to another, but the refresh rate actually deals with the repeated illumination of the same frames. So, if you ever have trouble with your monitor flickering or something similar, you may need to reset your refresh rate so that you'll have a clearer display.

To find out what your refresh rate is set to, right click on your desktop and choose Properties. Next, click on the Settings tab and then hit the Advanced button. Once that new window opens, click on the Monitor tab and you'll see your refresh rate under the Monitor settings area. If you click on the pull down menu, you'll see that you can choose from a refresh rate of 60, 70, 72, 75 and 85 Hertz. A comfortable rate is 85 for larger monitors (17" or 19"), but if you have a smaller sized monitor, you may want to try a lower refresh rate. Once you have it set to fit your needs, you'll have the best display your computer has ever seen!
