Compacting
Thunderbird
You may recall that
awhile back, I wrote a tip on compacting your e-mail folders in Outlook
Express. (You can read that tip here).
Well, ever since, I have been getting questions about how you can do it
in other e-mail programs. After all that, I went on a searching rampage,
but I was only able to find directions on how to do it in Thunderbird.
So, if you're a Thunderbird user, listen up. This one's for you!
To compact your folders
in Thunderbird, first make sure that you have the folder you want to work
with selected. Then go to File, Compact Folders.
It will then go through the process. It will go through a couple of steps,
but it should only take a few minutes. It just depends on how many e-mails
you have in that particular folder. It's a good idea to do this for all
the folders you use in Thunderbird on a regular basis. Now, I'm sure you're
wondering why you should do this, right? Well, read on to find out!
When you delete an
e-mail in Thunderbird, it doesn't really go away for good. It will be
hidden from you, but it actually stays there until something else takes
its place. But when you compact everything, the e-mails are erased. If
you don't compact the folders, all of those old deleted e-mails will build
up and they might cause you some problems later on. It may even cause
Thunderbird to stall on you at various times and we all know that's no
fun! You should do this quick procedure at least once a week if you want
to keep your e-mail folders in top condition. And believe me, it'll be
worth your trouble in the end!
