Tip #4448 - Google Gdrive Update
Printer Friendly Version | E-Mail This Tip
Q:
Awhile back, you ran a tip about something called the Gdrive from
Google. I remember reading about it and finding it very interesting,
but I never heard anything else about it. Do you have any updated
details on it? Any information you have would be a great help. Thanks!
A:
Ah, yes, Google's Gdrive. That's
a name I haven't heard in quite some time, but I definitely remember
writing about it. Just like you, I found it to be very interesting
as well, but after that tip was put in the newsletter, I never really
heard anything else about the Gdrive. So, when I saw this question
in my e-mail the other day, I went on a researching frenzy. I wanted
to find out what was going on with it just as much as you did and
let me tell you, I found some information I think you're really going
to like!
First
of all, I want to remind everyone about what exactly the Gdrive is.
To do that, I copied a couple excerpts from the original tip for you
below. Once you refresh your memory, we'll then move on and find out
what Google has in mind to do with the Gdrive next. Let's take a look
see, shall we?!
To
begin, the Gdrive would basically offer you an unlimited amount of
storage space for just about any type of document (e-mails, Web sites,
pictures, favorites, etc.) you may have. Google has been talking for
quite awhile now about "a world of infinite storage, bandwidth
and CPU power." In the past, they've also mentioned how they
would like to "house all user files" and allow them to be
accessible from anywhere. And that's exactly what the Gdrive would
bring to the table.
The logo for the Gdrive seems to be "Store 100%," simply
put, because they want to be able to store all of your data for you.
People who wish to have an off site backup place for their data would
certainly eat this right up. Users with a good broadband connection
would probably also enjoy the Gdrive.
At the end of
that tip, I told you not to get your hopes up, because at that time,
everything about the Gdrive was still a rumor. I wasn't sure how long
we were going to have to wait for it to actually be released, so I
didn't want you all to be disappointed if it didn't work out. Well,
from the looks of things now, the wait is almost over! That's right,
according to a few online articles I have read, it looks like Google
is finally ready to release the Gdrive. There's not a whole lot of
information out about it yet, but it seems as if the Gdrive will debut
soon.
Now, as most of
you probably know, Google already offers various online storage options,
but it sounds like the Gdrive will improve those even more. More than
likely, the Gdrive will end up tying all of those services together
into a single search box. That way, you won't have to go back and
forth between the different programs any longer. It's also been said
that the Gdrive will act more like an overlay to the other file management
utilities, instead of just an extra extension. That makes it even
better!
Like I said, there
is no official release date for the Gdrive as of yet, but it definitely
sounds like both free and paid versions will be on their way shortly.
Maybe Google's just waiting to give you a late Christmas gift and
they'll surprise you with the release right after New Year's. You
just never know! I will continue to keep you updated on this, but
until then, just keep your eyes and ears open. The Gdrive will be
comin' to town soon!
