February 2008 Windows Updates

With it now being three days after the release of the February 2008 Windows Updates, I figured most of you have already updated your computers and we can talk a little bit about what has changed. I also wanted to take this time to clear up any confusion you may have about some of this month's updates. I've been getting a lot of questions in my e-mail about it, so it's definitely something I want to address today. So, without further ado, let's take a look and see what we've got!

According to Microsoft's security bulletin, posted on February 12, 2008, they have fixed 17 flaws in 11 patches, with six of those being classified as "critical." The other five were placed under the "important" category. Now, most of the critical updates dealt with MS Office programs, so if you don't have all of those installed on your computer, you probably didn't see as many updates come through. Some of the programs hit the hardest were Microsoft Word, Works, Publisher and Visual Basic 6. Another on the critical side included a cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.

On the other hand, most of the important updates dealt with Internet services, including one for Windows Vista and its SP1, which is supposed to be released in mid to late March 2008. Although that's an important update, you won't have to worry too much about it until the full version is finally released. Now, there's one more thing I want to talk about and that has to do with Internet Explorer 7. Awhile back, I told you an upgrade for IE 7 would be included with this month's updates and that you would be required to install it. Well, I must have been wrong, because it wasn't on the list. So, I guess if you're still in love with IE 6, you can rest easy for at least another month. I'll keep you posted on any other changes regarding the Internet Explorer browser, but until then, go on and enjoy your February updates. They're all yours!
