Tech News for 10-21-09

This week will be an important one for many Windows users as Microsoft officially releases their new version of the popular operating system, Windows 7, on Thursday, October 22nd. A rumor is also spreading about the possibility of Microsoft branded retail stores, which will sell Microsoft products such as Windows, Zune and Xbox. This is alluded to by an advertisement in the Arizona Republic that indicates a Microsoft Store in Arizona will have its grand opening on Thursday.


On the wireless front, Verizon Wireless is starting a spur of rumors after they presented a new commercial last week promoting a cell phone named the “Droid”. Though this may sound like business as usual, the phone was never shown or identified as it has not yet been released. Verizon is promoting this phone as being better than the iPhone, providing users features that the iPhone can't do.


Finland has become the first country to create a law declaring broadband Internet access a legal right. Telecommunication companies in Finland will be required to provide all citizens with an Internet connection that runs at speeds of at least 1 megabit per second, which is the country's current goal. It plans on increasing this speed to 100 times faster, at speeds of 100 megabit per second, by the year 2015. Finland is one of the most “plugged in”countries in the world, with and estimated 95 percent of the population having Internet access.
