If you’ve fallen victim to some nasty viruses or horrible spyware, chances are you won’t be able to boot up your antivirus software. What many computer users don’t know is that you can also get access to virus removal scans online. So, when your antivirus won’t work and you can’t get rid of the virus any other way, here’s some Web sites you can visit to put everything back the way it was.

Trend Micro HouseCall

Many computer users rely on Trend Micro for their antivirus needs but when you’ve got a virus, sometimes your installed version won’t boot up, so the company’s got a free online scan that can be used by anyone in this situation, not just Trend Micro users. It’s called HouseCall and it’s a free virus scan that you can get right now... just go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com. When you get there, click on Launch HouseCall 6.5 (you have to have Java or ActiveX controls enabled):

Read the Terms of Use and click Launch HouseCall. You’re ready to go! HouseCall will scan your computer for security threats (not just viruses, but spyware too) and report back to you on them.

Norton Security Scan

Norton Security Scan is the online free security scan offering from Symantec, makers of the popular Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security products. If you want to start using this one, first make sure you’re running Internet Explorer 5.0 or above, and then head over to http://security.symantec.com and click Continue to Symantec Security Check:

Don’t click Download Now unless you want a scan every week. You’ll get a pop-up with two options: Security Scan and Virus Detection. Click the Start button underneath the Virus Detection heading:

Read the End-User License Agreement, click Accept and then Next. The scan will begin and when it’s done, you’ll be able to see all the nasty viruses that have infected your system!

So, next time you’ve got a virus and can’t open your antivirus program, you know where to go!
