Trimming the Vista Border

Trimming the Vista Border

Here’s another one for all you Windows Vista users out there!

Windows Vista, by default, has huge borders around all their pages. This was probably done to show off the new transparency, but if you prefer a more slimmed down, minimal approach, you can easily configure this setting to make it a little more reasonable for yourself.

Here’s an image with the normal window border you are probably used to seeing. More so, the borders look even more ridiculously large if you aren’t using the Aero interface.

Now, here’s a picture of the window border after some of the “padding” has been removed. It’s much less wasted space, don’t you think?!

To make this change on your Vista computer, you’ll need to open the classic Appearance Settings dialogue box. To get there, right click on your desktop and choose Personalize. Then click on Window Color and Appearance.

If you have the Aero interface enabled, you’ll have to click on the choice of “Open classic appearance properties for more color options” in order to proceed.

Next, click the Advanced button and then from the drop down menu, choose Border Padding. The default will be set to 4, but you can change yours to whatever you’d like. I changed mine down to 0 (zero) for the second screenshot you saw above.

A setting of 1 or 2 would probably be more reasonable for your system. You’ll just have to test it out and see what you like the best. Once you have a border that’s a little more realistic for yourself, click OK and you’ll be all set. No more bulky borders in Vista. I’m lovin’ it!
