Tweak UI

Tweak UI

I like to turn my computer on in the morning, have a cup of coffee and then get to work. But I am always stopped by that annoying logon screen. I just wonder, is there any way I can put in my username and password automatically so I don’t have to bother with it? There must be a way.

Luckily, there is and better yet, it’s quite painless.

Well, before I explain that, I want to point out that if you do adopt this approach, it means that anybody who turns on your computer can get access, since your logon details are put in automatically. Are you sure you want that? Do you want to take that risk?

If you’re sure you do, proceed with me.

I am going to introduce you to a very versatile little tool called Tweak UI, produced by Microsoft.

Browse on over to the Microsoft Power Toys site and just scroll down on the right hand panel until you see the Tweak UI entry (see picture).

Click on this and it will take you to the download tab, which looks like this:

The following sequence of pictures shows the steps you should take in this process. First, click on Save, select where to save it to and then click on the TweakUIPowertoySetup.exe file in your selected download folder.

Next, select Run.

Then click on the Next button.

Now, you need to agree to the End User License Agreement (not that you have much choice!). Do read it carefully first though!

Finally, you will see the Install Completed box! Click Finish.

Now, go to the Start menu on your computer, select All Programs and you should now see an entry for Powertoys for Windows. Clicking on that will show Tweak UI as one of the selections. Choose this and you will see the Tweak UI box open.

Next, navigate down to the Logon (1) entry and click on this to reveal the Autologon (2). The screen to the right will show where you must make entries. Check the box that says “Log on automatically at system startup,” then enter your username where shown (3). Thereafter, click the Set Password button (4), which will lead you to the Password screen where you must enter your password twice. Then click OK. Finally, click Apply (5) and you are done!

In the future, when you turn on your computer, it will log on automatically for you and you will be finished sooner than you can finish your coffee. How does that sound?!

By the way, while you are in the Tweak UI screen, take a look at the variety of other things that you can modify and change in Windows! It’s not in the scope of this article to go into them, but you might want to have a look around. Please though, if you don’t know what you are doing, leave well enough alone and get some help!
