Twitter Launches #music Service

Social networking site Twitter has launched a new music service called #music. The service mines people’s activity on Twitter to find out which songs are the most popular and to find new artists who are rising in popularity. It also features music-related Tweets from musicians. You’ll be able to see what singers your favorite singers and your friends follow on Twitter and what music they are currently listening to. You can then re-Tweet those songs to your followers.

You can also scroll through the charts to find an act that interests you. If you tap their avatar, you’ll see their top song and be able to follow them to their profile.

The songs on Twitter #music will come from music services  iTunes, Spotify and Rdio. The app will default to iTunes to allow you to listen to a preview, but you can log into your Rdio and Spotify accounts to listen to the full tracks. Twutter says the company is also looking at adding other music providers.

The free music service should be a way for Twitter to start earning some cash from its many followers. Those third-party music services should share the revenue generated by the purchases and subscriptions from Twitter #music.

Right now Twitter #music is available for iOs and at music.twitter.com. [1]
