Tired of fumbling for keys? The August Smart Lock lets you use your Android or iPhone to unlock your door. And it’s not just your phone, you can also use an iPod or you your shiny new Apple Watch.
You buy and install the August Smart Lock like any other lock, but this lock connects to your WiFi and works with an app installed on your mobile device to lock and unlock your door.
You’ll also never need to copy another key. If there’s a guest coming for a week or so, you don’t have to run down to the hardware store. You can set up a virtual key for your visitor (or family and friends you’d like to be able to access your house.)
You can grant access for a week, a day or even for a few minutes. Say you wanted to allow a neighbor into the house to check on something for you, or so they could drop off a package UPS at their their house. You could set up a key that only allowed them access for a few minutes and then delete that guest account instantly. You can also lock or unlock your door from anywhere using your phone.
The lock will autolock behind you when you leave and then automatically unlock as you approach the house and it detects your mobile device.
You also have access to an activity log on the app that tracks when people came and left. Since everyone has their own unique key, you’ll know who was there and when they left.
You can even use it with Apple’s virtual assistant Siri, but you will need an Apple TV installed for that. The lock does require 4AA batteries to keep up that WiFi connection and you’ll need to download the app for your smartphone. The August Smart Lock starts at $199 and are available through the Apple Store and other major retailers.
