What Does A Jellybean Have To Do With My Phone?

Bill from Gallipolis, Ohio writes:

There’s some apps I want to get, but I can’t find them for my phone. My son says it’s because I don’t have a jellybean phone. What does that mean?

What it means, Bill, is that you don’t have the very latest version of the Android operating system and the apps you want may not work with older versions. Instead of using terms like version 2.0 or 4.1, Google likes to give the operating system for Android food nicknames. Especially sweet treat nicknames.  Here’s a rundown of the Android operating systems and their sweet nicknames:

  • Android 1.5 – Cupcake
  • Android 1.6 – Donut
  • Andorid 2.0 – Eclair
  • Android 2.2- Froyo
  • Android 2.3 – Gingerbread
  • Android 3.0 – Honeycomb
  • Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Android 4.1 – Jelly Bean
  • Android 4.4 – KitKat

That can lead to some really weird sentences. I saw one today that said a particular phone was “pure Jelly Bean.”  Myself, I’m about to upgrade my phone from a Gingerbread to a Jelly Bean.

Hope that clears things up. Why do I suddenly want candy?
