What Is Windows 10?

Sunday, February 8th, 2015 by | Filed Under: Quick Tips, Windows 10

Rosie writes: Ok this may sound stupid but what exactly is WINDOWS 10??  And will it change my 8.1 system if I upgrade when it is out. Thanks

Rosie, Windows 10 is the latest operating system from Microsoft. Like Windows XP, 7 and 8 – it is a completely new operating system. So, yes it will change your 8.1 to Windows 10 if you upgrade.

We don’t know yet if Windows 10 will be similar to the Windows 8.1 upgrade from Windows 8 that kept your files and settings intact or if it will be a clean install that will require you to back up your important files on another drive before installing.  Users of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free when it is released, probably sometime late this summer. That offer of a free upgrade will last for one year.

Will Windows 10 Be Similar To Windows 7 Style Of Operating System?
Start Up On & Off Controls, + Programs All Displayed On The Left Side Of The Computer?

Will it be possible to create a partition for Win 10,install Win 10, keep Win 8.1 and double boot?

Tom, you can do that if you want to run the technical preview, that’s how we have it running here. But if you want the free upgrade in August, you will need to update your 8.1 to 10.

What if I’m just tired of having to constantly adjust what I do with my home computer because automatic changes and required updates add greater difficulty rather than simplifying the use and access of word documents I’ve created and saved (e.g., letters, essays, add/use Tables in Word to keep household financial records and to organize various lists, save family photos, recipes, household products lists, volunteer work lists and records, etc., etc.) I have NO “network” NO “administrator” and NO “help desk” and yet when I run into problems in Windows 7 (I do not want Windows 8), I’m directed to contact my help desk. I cannot find “fixes,” though I search diligently. In fact I cannot easily find documents I’ve saved my own self, without hunting–sometimes without success–and wasting valuable time and energy. I’m fed up with this. I wish there could be a SIMPLE, STRAIGHT-FORWARD operating system. I’m a retired legal assistant. I understand computers, but I want to be able to freely use this machine without have to constantly change what I use it for to accommodate changes that are not even necessary for this use. So, I’m not looking forward to Windows 10. There’s still so much “stuff” in Windows 7 that I don’t need, nor will ever use in a home system. All that additional, unneeded “stuff” makes working with this computer cumbersome and time-consuming. Worst of all, Microsoft with each of it’s upgrades and newer versions, still has not fixed the “bugs” carried over from the very beginning of Word.doc.
